About Heat Pumps in Savannah
Living in Savannah means dealing with intense summer heat and humidity, followed by mild but occasionally chilly winters. A high-efficiency heat pump is the ideal climate control solution for our region, providing both powerful cooling during our 85°F summers and reliable heating when temperatures dip toward 50°F. By choosing professional heat pump installation, you ensure your home remains a comfortable sanctuary year-round while maximizing energy efficiency.
Whether you need a routine heat pump service to keep your system running smoothly or a complete heat pump replacement, our goal is to help you maintain comfort without breaking the bank. From traditional air source heat pumps to modern ductless mini-split systems, we provide the expertise needed to navigate your options and find the perfect fit for your Savannah home.
Climate Considerations
Savannah's humid subtropical climate places unique demands on HVAC systems. Because our summers are long and hot, your heat pump works hard to pull moisture out of the air, while our mild winters require a system that can switch modes seamlessly. A properly sized and maintained heat pump is the most efficient way to manage these shifts, significantly lowering energy bills compared to older, traditional furnace and AC setups.
Heat Pumps Tips
Schedule professional heat pump service twice a year to ensure your system is ready for both the summer heat and the winter chill.
Always hire a licensed and insured technician to perform your heat pump installation to guarantee safety and performance.
Change your air filters every 1 to 3 months to prevent airflow restriction, which is a common cause for a heat pump not cooling.
Keep the area around your outdoor unit clear of debris, grass, and shrubs to prevent the system from freezing up during cold snaps.
Utilize a programmable thermostat to optimize your energy usage, especially during the peak of Savannah's summer season.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does heat pump installation cost and are there rebates?
Costs vary based on system capacity and home size. However, homeowners can often offset these costs through federal tax credits and local utility rebates for high-efficiency installations.
How does a heat pump provide both heating and cooling?
A heat pump uses refrigerant to move heat. In summer, it pulls heat out of your home; in winter, it reverses the process to pull heat from the outside air into your home.
Heat pump vs. furnace: which is better for Savannah?
In Savannah's mild winter climate, heat pumps are typically more energy-efficient than gas furnaces because they move heat rather than generating it via combustion.
Why is my heat pump not cooling or freezing up outside?
This is often caused by low refrigerant levels, dirty coils, or a faulty fan motor. If your unit is frozen, turn it to the 'emergency heat' or 'fan only' setting and call a professional.
How long do heat pumps last and what maintenance is needed?
With regular professional maintenance, most heat pumps last 12–15 years. Routine inspections help catch small issues before they become expensive repairs.
Are ductless mini-splits a good alternative to ducted systems?
Yes, ductless mini-splits are excellent for homes without existing ductwork or for adding comfort to room additions, offering high efficiency and individual zone control.
What tax credits and incentives are available for heat pumps?
The Inflation Reduction Act provides significant federal tax credits for installing energy-efficient heat pumps. Check with your local utility provider for additional regional rebates.
How is a heat pump sized correctly for my home?
A qualified contractor will perform a 'Manual J' load calculation, which accounts for your home's square footage, insulation levels, and window orientation to ensure the system isn't too small or too large.
What is auxiliary or backup heat?
Auxiliary heat is a secondary heating source, usually electric heat strips, that kicks in automatically when the outdoor temperature drops too low for the heat pump to extract enough heat on its own.
What should I expect during a heat pump installation?
A professional installation includes removing your old unit, inspecting ductwork, installing the new indoor and outdoor components, charging the system with refrigerant, and performing a thorough performance test.
